- The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.16% at 13,328.07 points, one day after notching up a 2.5% gain. London's FTSE 100 closed up 1.1% at 6,432.10.
Stock markets in Europe and Asia were boosted by Wall Street's Tuesday gains, inspired by mild optimism about the scale of the credit crisis.
French shares ended the day higher, but German stocks were barely changed.
The Paris Cac 40 index closed up 1.35%, while Frankfurt's Dax only managed a 0.07% rise.
